Ladies Garden Broughton Castle

Broughton Castle is essentially the home of the 21st Lord and Lady Saye and Sele, whose family name is Fiennes, having been owned continuously by this family since the C14th.

The original manor house, much of which remains today, was built around 1300 by Sir John Broughton on an island site surrounded by a three acre moat.  The castle was enlarged in the C16th at which time it was embellished with magnificent plaster ceilings, panelling, and fireplaces.  It is surrounded by delightful gardens and parkland.

Simon Jenkins awarded it five stars in his book, 'England's Thousand Best Houses', one of only twenty to receive five.
